FINANCING FOR CONTINENTAL AIRLINES GLOBAL GATEWAY DEVELOPMENT - NEWARK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

In response to continued growth in domestic and international passenger traffic at its Newark hub, Continental Airlines developed plans to construct a new international terminal and related facilities at Newark International Airport, referred to as the Global Gateway Development. The Global Gateway Development includes construction of a new Terminal C concourse, with capacity for up to 19 gates connected to a new Federal Inspection Services (FIS) facility.

The Global Gateway Development is being financed by special facility revenue bonds issued by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority on behalf of Continental Airlines. In February 1999, Leigh Fisher Associates was retained by Continental Airlines to serve as the Aviation Demand Consultant in connection with the financing.

Analyses conducted by Leigh Fisher Associates included:

  • Economic and demographic trends in the New York region
  • Recent historical trends and forecast growth in passenger traffic at New York area airports
  • Demand patterns and characteristics of Continental's hub at Newark
  • Existing and forecast supply versus demand relationships for gates at the New York area airports

The results of the analyses were used to demonstrate the demand for new terminal facilities at the New York area airports in aggregate and at Newark International Airport.

Leigh Fisher Associates prepared an independent report summarizing the analyses for inclusion in the Official Statement for the bonds. Leigh Fisher Associates also participated in meetings and coordination related to the financing.
