Forecasts of passengers, cargo, and aircraft operations are the foundation of airport
financial and physical planning. LFA's economics and forecasting consultants have
prepared forecasts for hundreds of airports, including notable airport megaprojects
such as the new Denver International Airport; the new Hong Kong International Airport
at Chek Lap Kok; and the new Incheon International Airport in
Seoul, South Korea.
Using computer models, regression analysis, experience, and judgment, we relate aviation
activity to population and economic trends in an airport's service region as well as to
national and international influences. Using our extensive in-house databases and databases
from recognized external sources, we analyze the key factors that affect the demand for
airline travel, such as competitive airline service, route networks, airfares, and global
alliances; and changes in technology, such as videoconferencing and high-speed rail. Our
models are also used to relate changes in annual demand to peak-period demand on airside
and landside facilities, including analyses of gate occupancy by time-of-day. We evaluate
the economic benefits of proposed airport improvements in relation to their costs. We also
conduct surveys of airline passengers, airport tenants, and other stakeholders to support
forecasting, economic, and planning studies and we assist our clients in evaluating the
risks associated with the forecasts.
To support airport marketing efforts, we analyze market and route profitability. Several
members of our staff have held positions in route planning and pricing at major airlines.
We have developed and maintain several worldwide databases in-house, including passenger trip
rates by country, effects of low-fare and startup airline service, airport gate utilization,
airline fleet evolution, and regional jet service.
