At most U.S. airports, a significant percentage of airline passengers are also rental car customers. On-airport rental car companies typically pay facility rentals plus a percentage of their airport-related revenues; rental cars are often the second largest nonairline revenue source after public parking. As the numbers of airport passengers increase, rental-car-related roadway and curbside congestion can be significant, and rental car operations may occupy land that would be better used for automobile parking or terminal-related expansion. This increase in passengers, and rental car customers, is also a problem for the rental car companies, as they incur higher operating costs while trying to maintain acceptable standards of customer service.
